Meet Sharon Stetzer
Breaking down gender barriers.
As a woman-owned business in the male-dominated contracting
industry, Lady Lighting and Contracting
Company faced many obstacles. Owner Sharon Stetzer started the contracting
company five years ago but had trouble getting her foot in the door to win
contracts. Another obstacle for Sharon
was that despite her company’s strong credit history, she was unable to get
bank financing due to personal credit issues. Lacking capital, she was unable
to expand her business and grow her reputation with builders.
Sharon
was referred by her Bank of America banker to ACCION Chicago. ACCION was able
to approve Sharon
for a $15,000 term loan in 2007. Sharon, now successful in growing her business,
has paid off her initial loan, has paid off her second loan also for $15,000,
and is currently paying off a third loan for $20,000.
Lady Lighting and Contracting Company has grown steadily
since being created in 2003. Business is booming and Sharon is pleased. Her favorite part of being
her own boss is being more flexible to spend time with her five children. She
also has more confidence not only as a contractor, but as a female
entrepreneur. “I have achieved all the initial goals I have set out,” says Sharon, “but you have to
keep setting higher goals to really achieve all that you want to.”
